This depends on the fullness you want. For a light to moderate fulness you can take fabric strip of length about 1.5 to 2 times the edge width. For a very full ruffle you can take 3 to 4 times. ie for a fabric edge of 10 inches you should take 40 inches wide fabric strip for making the ruffle.

For instance for a 22″ bodice, how much fabric would I need inwidth to ruffle and fit the bodice?
