In reply to Judy Holmes. Hi, Take out the warp thread and the weft thread and compare. The crosswise threads are weaker than the lengthwise thread. it is also stretchier - these threads runs across the fabric from selvedge to selvedge. Lengthwise thread runs parallel to selvedge, is stronger and doesnot stretch as much. You have to cut along this lengthwise thread (most of the time). Look at this post on grainline

Do you have any suggestions on how to keep your bought patterns intact, so they can be used in different sizes for years to come, keeping the master copy in the envelope?

In other words, not having to cut them to size, but having the size you want at the time, for several uses. I hope that makes sense. TIA

How much impact will it have to cut perpendicular to the grain? I have some handwoven fabric I want to use but the pattern features distinct stripes that I want to put up and down, not across my body. Will it sag a lot?
